Power Plant III executed a series of tasks aiming at the reduction of the pollutants emitted to the natural environment which made the installation meet the best available technique requirements and does not exceed the critical values. Conditions of emitting the pollutants to the environment are in line with the permissible environmental quality standards.
The following projects were carried out in the field of atmospheric air protection:

  • primary method of nitrogen oxides emission reduction maintaining average concentration at the level of 400 - 490 mg/Nm3,
  • modernization of the electrostatic precipitators dedusting flue gases  from the boilers; this guarantees dedusting efficiency over 99%; the concentrations in flue gases from OP-650 boilers do not exceed  50 mg/Nm3,
  • flue gas desulphurizing installation of the efficiency amounting to 95%. Average concentration of SO2 does not exceed 400 mg/Nm3.

Two circulating fluidized-bed boilers manufactured by Foster Wheeler took over the tasks of the pulverized coal boilers that were in operation in Power Plant II for over forty years. These boilers are referred to as ‘sources of ecologically clean emissions’ as the coal combustion conditions allow significant reduction of the two most troublesome pollutants – sulphur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide without the necessity of additional installations to reduce these pollutant emissions.
By adding limestone to the furnace over 80 percent sulphur dioxide reduction is achieved as the sulphur dioxide binds with calcium oxide creating calcium sulphate. Application of the high-efficiency electrostatic precipitators in the fluidized-bed boiler flue gases dedusting installation guarantees that the dust emission to the atmosphere does not exceed the permissible norm.
