Pursuant to Regulation of the Minister of Economy of 19 December 2005 on detailed scope of duty to obtain and present for remittance certificates of origin, to pay the substitute payment and to purchase electrical energy and heat produced from renewable sources of energy, Jaworzno III Power Plant is obliged to generate part of the electrical energy from renewable energy sources – the so-called ‘green energy’. In order to face these requirements Jaworzno III Power Plant commenced to co-fire biomass initially in the Power Plant II and then after the completion of the investment project ‘Biomass Feed System to 200 MW Power Unit Boilers in Power Plant III’ biomass has also been co-fired in Power Plant III.
Forest biomass as well as agro biomass in the form of, among others, wood silvers, pellets and sawdust is fired in Jaworzno III Power Plant. Maximum efficiency of Jaworzno installations amounts to 10 percent of the biomass volume in relation to the coal volume in case of Power plant III and 30 percent in Power Plant II. The complete installation in Power Plant III was commissioned in November 2008.
On May 24, 2010 Południowy Koncern Energetyczny – a part of TAURON Group – signed a contract a consortium led by Rafako SA for the design, delivery, and construction and commissioning of the biomass-fired boiler and the biomass storage and feed system in Jaworzno III Power Plant - Power Plant.
Construction of the generation unit fired with renewable energy sources in Jaworzno III Power Plant – Power Plant II is a new investment project comprised of a complete, modern sustainable biomass-fired boiler, auxiliary facilities, complete biomass storage and feed system and also modernization of the existing 50 MWe power unit facilities. Due to such an approach, the Renewable Energy Sources Power Unit will make use of the existing Turbine no 1 which currently is a back-up turbine and is in good technical condition allowing further, long-term generation of the electrical energy.
