These are voluntary social organizations which have been established to defend workers' economic and social interests. The first trade unions were founded in Great Britain in 18th century. In 19th century they gained legal rights and gradually freedom to organize into unions and national associations. Various ideology and referring to it, especially to socialism, syndicalism, liberalism, christianity, social science, communism are its main field of interest. In many autocratic countries trade unions were suppressed, in communist countries they were dependent on the authority and served its purposes (which is why independent trade unions were founded).
In our country trade unions were founded in the end of 19th century, resistance unions (kasy oporu), 1902 Polish Trade Unions (Zjednoczenie Zawodowe Polaków), in independent Poland: Commission of Central Trade Unions (Komisja Centralnych Związków Zawodowych, 1919), Christian Trade Unions (Chrześcijańskie Zjednoczenie Narodowe, 1921), Association of Trade Unions (Związek Związków Zawodowych, 1931). Just after World War II ZZ (Association of Trade Unions - Zrzeszenie Związków Zawodowych) was dependent on the Communist Party (PZPR) and pursued its policy in the workers' environments. In 1980 Solidarity (NSZZ "Solidarność") was founded and in 1981 - NSZZ RI "Solidarność".
In 1981 all trade unions were suspended and in 1982 dissolved. One part of Solidarity, though, worked underground, in 1984 OPZZ was founded, in 1989 Solidarity - NSZZ "Solidarność" i NSZZ RI "Solidarność" were officially registered. At present among the best known international unions are: International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, World Federation of Trade Unions, World Confederation of Work, as well as French - CGT, German - DGB, American AFL - CIO, British TUC, Polish Solidarity - NSZZ "Solidarność" and NSZZ RI "Solidarność".
